Just came back from Toronto where we attended the conference by the Independent Art Media OnFire, which was in fact very interesting. We would like to underline the keynote closing address by the artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer who talked about his interest in creating platforms for public participation, by “perverting technologies such as robotics, computerized surveillance and telematic networks”. This conference was in the middle of the preparation G8 and G20 summits.  Streets were blocked off, security heightened even a week before the arrival of the world leaders. The Toronto Star wrote an article to see what each G20 member will bring to the table. The Americans will bring their beloved fried chicken; Italy their pizza; Canada their “poutine” (a French Canadian invention); France, their crêpes; etc.  and the Australians their “I do not know what” (no recipe title in the Star), but it is sliced beets, pineapple and fried eggs with bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar and “GBK sauce”.

Could we have one of our many Aussie friends to comment on this dish?  Thank you!

    It’s the Aussie burger as opposed to the USA (Mcdonald’s style) hamburger.

    On a toasted bun (bread roll) with real beef hamburger pattie and the trimmings are as above although pineapple is optional and gbk sauce is a bit of a ring-in. It can be replaced with good old tomato sauce (otherwise known as ketchup).

    If you order it in a cafe it generally comes with chips (alias French fries ).

A blank canvas is a space brimming with possibilities—“a painting to be made,” as Cézanne wrote. It is what Deleuze calls the “catastrophe”—nothing can be seen, yet everything is there as if one were trapped in the eye of a storm. And from this catastrophe, one must find a way out: the very first stroke, a scribble, clichés to be destroyed, “forms that fade away”; erasing, starting over; “the hand, freed from the eye, runs wild,” and then—there! “The color rises,” and so on until the final work emerges.
